How Common is Colour-Blindness?

Welcome to Perception Eyewear!

Colour-blindness affects more people than many of us realise. In this article, we explore a simple but important question: just how many people are colour-blind?

As people who are colour-blind, and as educators with many years of experience, we understand how profoundly red-green colour-blindness can affect everyday life.

When colour cues are unclear, everyday tasks such as choosing clothes, reading signs, interpreting charts or shopping online can become challenging. Colour can also create barriers at school, at work, while travelling, and when enjoying sport, art and entertainment.

How Common is Colour-Blindness?

Approximately 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females have a colour vision deficiency. Red-green colour-blindness is the most common type.

Across any population, around 4.4% of people will be colour-blind.

Using this estimate with population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Worldometer:

  • In Perth, WA with 2.5 million people, about 110,000 will be colour-blind.
  • In Sydney, NSW with 5.6 million people, about 246,000 will be colour-blind.
  • Across the USA with 349 million people, about 15 million will be colour-blind.
  • The world population is about 8.3 billion people, which means about 365 million will be colour-blind.

It is interesting that the worldwide colour-blind population may be larger than the entire population of the United States!
